EnerPHit House
This project reimagines a typical 1950s semi‑detached house in Hertfordshire, transforming it into a model of sustainable living. The design aspires to achieve EnerPHit certification, the Passivhaus standard for retrofit, by dramatically improving the home’s energy performance. Measures include enhanced insulation, thermal bridge reduction, airtightness, and the installation of high‑performance windows.

To complement these upgrades, the home will feature an air source heat pump and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR), ensuring year‑round comfort with minimal energy demand. Together, these systems reduce reliance on fossil fuels, lower running costs, and create a healthier indoor environment.

The architectural design also enhances family life: a rear extension provides a light‑filled social space for gathering and entertaining, while a two‑storey side extension enlarges the boxroom and creates a more spacious family bathroom.

With the UK’s housing stock among the oldest and least efficient in Europe - and 80% of the homes that will be occupied in 2050 already built - projects like this demonstrate how retrofit can make a real difference. By combining sustainability with modern design, this home shows that energy efficiency and contemporary living can go hand in hand.
